The organic food awards is organised by the Soil Association of Great Britain. A celebration of excellence in organic food,
the awards offer prestigious recognition for the achievements of growers and producers in the UK organic food industry.
The Soil Association is a charity that promotes the proliferation of sustainable food through organic farming methods in the UK. In addition to advocating the benefits of natural and healthy foods, the association also sets nationally recognised standards for the production of organic food, organic farming and food processing methods and organic catering.

As the popularity of organic food has grown – so have the awards. Running for just over twenty years, the awards now offer prizes in twelve categories including organic wines, fruit and vegetables, organically produced meat or fish and organic baby food. The competition is open to all organic food suppliers whose produce is registered and certified as organic in accordance with EU and soil association regulations.

organic salad The prizes will be presented during the soil association’s Organic Fortnight. Held nationwide during the autumn this event aims to raise awareness of the benefits of organic food – through promotional events up and down the country at shops, markets, health food stores, farms and organic restaurants.

Concerns over diet and food safety are believed to have contributed to the dramatic rise in organic food suppliers in the last few years. Since the 1990s the production of organic food worldwide has increased by around 20% per year. People do not want genetically modified foods, coated in pesticides or meat and fish that has been pumped full of antibiotics and hormones.

Choosing organic food means that consumers can rest assured that the produce they have bought will be safe to eat as organic production methods are heavily regulated and monitored to ensure that they conform to the highest standards.

organic vegetables Producers must obtain special certification to be able to market their food as organic. At present, certified organic food accounts for around 2% of worldwide food sales (although of course many third world countries produce organic food as a matter of course, without registering or complying to specific organic standards


organic bread The environmental benefits are tremendous as organic farms do not use pesticides or other synthetic chemicals into the environment. Organic farms are more energy efficient and create less waste than conventional farming methods.

They are also better at sustaining diverse eco systems – for example where pesticides are not used; the fields contain populations of coexisting plants, insects and animals.

organic fruit A study of the benefits of organic food in 2007 found that organic fruit and veg contains up to 40% more cancer-beating antioxidants than food that is not organic. Organic milk was found to have 60% more.

Many people say that organic food tastes better too – particularly organic free range meat like free range organic chicken, pork, lamb, beef and organic fish.

The organic food awards now include two separate prizes for organically produced alcohol. These show recognition for the best organic beer or cider and the best organic wine.

The popularity of organic booze has risen dramatically in recent years with many drinkers claiming that the purity of the organic ingredients used in organic alcohol production mean that they are less likely to experience a hangover, even after fairly heavy consumption.

Most organic wine and beer produced in Britain is done at micro breweries – using traditional methods and this relatively small-scale production with attention to detail and good quality organic ingredients is probably also a contributing factor to the rising popularity of organic drinks.
